Rare Bird Moment as Photographer Witnesses Mistle Thrush Feeding Orphaned Blackbird as Her Own

Imagine the scene: a quiet field in North Shropshire, England. Photographer Andrew Fusek-Peters is patiently waiting, his camera poised. What he captured next was nothing short of miraculous—a mistle thrush, a picture of devoted motherhood, not only feeding her own hungry chicks but also an orphaned blackbird!

It’s the kind of moment that makes you rub your eyes and look again. The thrush, a diligent provider, would feed her babies, then turn to the little blackbird fledgling, beak open and hopeful, and offer it a worm. “I thought it was a very dark thrush baby at first, then I realized it’s actually a blackbird,” Fusek-Peters recounted. This incredibly rare act of adoption highlights the powerful instinct of maternal care, even across different species.

Andrew believes the blackbird chick was likely abandoned or its mother perished. He explains that an open mouth from a hungry chick can trigger a feeding response in nearby female birds. Witnessing this incredible connection unfold just feet away was a “special moment” for the photographer, one he found no photographic precedent for online. It’s a vivid reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected bonds are the strongest.
